ARTS

Exploring the Arts is a popular part of life at Taieri College.  Music, Drama, Visual Arts and Kapa Haka provide rich opportunities for students to discover and express their creative instincts.

Our new Performing Arts Centre, gives students an excellent stage on which to show off their talents.

Our passionate music teachers and tutors encourage students to explore a variety of music genres.  From Rockquest to choral festivals and chamber music recitals, Taieri College students compose, practise and play in them all.

Whether it is performing in recognised plays or having fun in impromptu theatresports, treading the boards is always extremely popular at Taieri College.  Budding thespians are giving expert direction in acting and enjoy performing with confidence in front of our college community.

Visual Art provides opportunities in Painting, Photography and Art Design.  Students can choose to follow an Arts pathway in a choice of art disciplines, providing aesthetic reward and NCEA credits at the same time.

Kapa Haka has developed in the last few years at Taieri College.  Our tutors passion for Kapa Haka has been passed on to our students.  For the first time ever, Taieri College's Kapa Haka performed in the 2017 Hautonga Otago Southland Kapa Haka Competition.

Drama

Welcome to Taieri College Drama! This subject is full of dynamic, vivacious people. Together in Drama you will increase your confidence and creativity. You will gain employable skills such as innovation, collaboration, public speaking, problem solving and a strong memory. In our vibrant co-operative learning atmosphere you will create films, short scripts, devise theatre with the concepts you are passionate about. You will learn about history, society and acting techniques. We can’t wait for you to join the ranks of successful performers that are already working in the industry while at Taieri College.

Art

In the Visual Arts we balance essential skills with creativity through a wide range of media. Drawing, Painting, Digital Art Technology, Photography, Film, Sculpture and Printmaking all get a look in at some point.

We try to make the art room a happy and fun place to be, as art is enjoyable and feeds the soul at times! However it can be competitive with the individual always aiming for a higher outcome, and students competing against the National Standards at senior level.

We do well, and staff are truly dedicated to helping students find their best means of expression through visual media. Who are we? The teachers, students and support staff, all feed in and communicate with each other.
We love it!

Music

The dictionary defines music as “Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion”. This is the foundation of all music at Taieri College. We have Choirs, Jazz band, Rock bands both in the Te Kainga and Senior school areas, and provide a variety of itinerant instrument lessons. We encourage creation through composition and enter Rockquest, Bandquest, Chamber Music, Big Sing, Jazz Festival, Secondary Schools Music Festival, Play it Strange song writing competition and the Who Love Who remixing competition. All students from Year 7 to 9 take part in the music course and there are independent senior classes from Year 10 onwards. If you can dream it, we can help you create it.

Kapa Haka

We have two Kapa Haka groups here at Taieri College. We have a Year 7&8 Kapa Haka group - Ngā Taiariari and a Year 9-13 Kapa Haka group - Ngā Piko o Te Taiari.

Our Year 7&8 Kapa Haka meet every Wednesday’s - Period 5 in the performing Arts Centre and our Year 9-13 Kapa Haka meet after school on Wednesday’s from 3pm-4pm in the library.

We have whaea Toni Crompton, Mr Tunoka and Miss Tuhega tutoring both groups.

This year unfortunately the Polyfest has been cancelled, however both groups are looking for any opportunities to perform. The students have enjoyed performing this term at Taieri College for Spirit Week and at Mossbrae.
